Georgian prison scandal draws pre-election criticism from Russia

Russia criticised Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili's government a week before a parliamentary election in the former Soviet state, saying that a prison abuse scandal raised questions about its ability to protect its citizens' rights.

Ukrainian energy minister pledges smooth energy transit to EU

Ukraine will provide reliable energy transit to the European Union, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Ministry quoted Minister Yuriy Boiko. The minister gave the assurances at the Brussels meeting with European Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger on Friday, September 21. Boiko stressed that Ukraine had created every condition for the uninterrupted transit of Russian gas to Europe.

Iran energy ministry needs $10.6 billion to complete projects

Iranian Energy Minister Majid Namjou has said that 130 trillion rials (some $10.6 billion) is needed to complete 270 semi-finished projects in the fields of dam and power plant building, water and wastewater treatment.

The Senate has overwhelmingly approved a resolution that reaffirms U.S. efforts to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, and says containment of a nuclear-capable Iran is not an option.
